Tour description

Miskolc, a town with county rank with a population of cca 200 000, the centre of Northern Hungary, is the third largest city of the country, which has plenty of landmarks to see. Miskolc’s most significant listed monument is the Diósgyőr Castle, a fortress built in 14th-15th centuries, which witnessed stormy events of the Hungarian history, mainly in the age of King Anjou Charles Robert and Luis the Great. We visit here a wax-figures show, exhibition of weapons and a medieval stamping work.On the week-ends medieval tournament and archery are organized for the visitors of the Castle.

During the sightseeing walk in Miskolc we visit valuable ecclesiastical buildings - including the Gothic Calvinist church of Avas (built in 1410, extended in 1780), the Renaissance belfry (built in 1570), the Baroque Roman Catholic church, the so called Mindszenty church (1743), the Baroque Minorite church and monastery (1734), the late Baroque Lutheran church (1797), the Louis XVI. style Hungarian Orthodox church, housing the biggest iconostase of Central Europe (18 m high with 88 pictures from 1888), the National Theatre (first stone theater of the present Hungary from 1823), the Elizabeth Bath, the Baroque building of the County Hall (1727) was rebuilt in Classicist style in 1836, the inner city and the Rákóczi House. We have a coffe at the Palace Hotel of Lillafüred.

The ancient city of Košice was awarded the title ”European Capital of Culture 2013”. We take a walk in the Old Town, with the Lower gate, the medieval Miklus Prison, the St. Elisabeth Cathedral, the St. Michael’s Chapel, the St. Urban Tower, the Forgách and Andrássy palaces, the baroque Franciscan Church, the County Hall, and many more. The St. Elizabeth's Cathedral, built in the 14th century by King Béla IV for the honour of his sister, St. Elizabeth of Bavaria is a Gothic masterpiece, and the city's oldest architectural landmark. Particularly imposing is the winged main altar with its three oversize statues and forty-eight panel paintings, while the lateral altars, Gothic wall paintings and sculptures add to the charm. The chatedral is housing the crypt of Ferenc Rákóczi II. The State Theatre was built in the middle of the city centre’s main park, according to the design of A.A.Lang and Steinhardt in historicizing style . In Every hour the park resounds with distinctive carillon from the twenty two bells that have adorned the park since 1997.
