Tour description

Tata is a baroque town with 25 thousand inhabitants situated near the Vienna-Budapest motorway. It is eventful history is reflected in its historic buildings of which the renaissance fortress is the best known.  The Castle been built since the end of 1300s, and today it is one of the jewels of Tata. Its heydays can be dated to the reign of Zsigmond Luxemburg and Mátyás Hunyadi  (15th century) as the summer resort of the king. The building stands at the shore of Old Lake. Beside the Castle during the tour we visit the Cifra and Nepomucenus Mills at the lake, the Esterhazy Palace, the Clocktower (bellfry) and the Holy Cross Church in the city center,  the  Turkish mosque and  the copf style tiny castle in the English Garden, the Calvinist, Lutheran and Capuchin churches and the calvary hill alike (Calvary, Chapel and .lookout tower).

 

After Tata we visit the building complex of the Camaldolese Hermitage of Majk. The monastery is one of the most beautiful and intact examples of Baroque Camaldulian hermitages in Central Europe and the only one Camaldulian monastery in Hungary. The monastic building complex – founded in 1733 by Prince Joseph Esterhazy – includes 17 detached cell-houses, the former ice-house, the garden grotto chapel, the Celli Blessed Virgin chapel, a water mill, the remaining tower of the church, and the U-shaped castle, originally was built as the central building of the monastery, but was later rebuilt as a hunting-lodge by the Eszterházy family in the 19th century.

Tata's biggest events are the Wild Geese Festival (the city is a special place of migration of wild geese) and the Old Lake Fishing Festival, when the spectacular fishing show is performed with a 400 meter long trawl net, the longest of its kind in Hungary. Feast are held late autumn/early winter. Ask for dates and actual programs.

Lunch of the famous Hungarian fishsoup can be arranged at the shore of the Old Lake in Tata!
