Tour description

Tokaj wine region is a historical wine region, and maybe the most famous one of the seven larger wine regions of Hungary. The region consists of 28 named villages and 11,149 hectares of classified vineyards. Tokaj has been declared a World Heritage Site in 2002. Its fame long predated this distinction because it is the origin of Tokaji aszú wine, the world's oldest botrytized wine. During the tour we show and tell everything about Hungarian wines, specially about Tokaj-wines, visit a cellar, learn about, how the "aszú" is produced, and also taste the legandary wines of the region.

Sárospatak is a jewel among the historic towns of Hungary, and is a much visited cultural and tourist centre. Sárospatak was a royal possession from the 11th century. The Castle was completed during the 16th century in a late Renaissance style, to the plans of Allessandro Vedani. The oldest part of the castle is the so-called Red Tower (Vöröstorony), a six-storied building with corner turrets. Rooms worth seeing in the Red Tower are the former chapel on the second floor and the so-called "Great Palace" on the floor above with fine Renaissance decoration. The east wing and the Red Tower are connected by the Lórántffy loggia (1645).The elegant arcades of the loggia, which are continued into the narrow stairway, together with the richly decorated openings of the Perényi wing constitute a fine example of Renaissance architecture in Hungary. The restored rooms of the castle house the so-called Rákóczi Museum, an exhibition of the national struggle for independence at the turn of the 17th/18th century, and the history of the Rákóczi dynasty, while other exhibits include beautiful furniture from the 16th-19th centuries, and works from the glass foundries nearby, some examples of the famous Habán pottery from Sárospatak.

The greatest event of the region is the Grape Harvest Feast in Tokaj, held annually in October. Ask for actual date and programs!
